  Adelphi University traces its early beginning as Adelphi Academy, established in 1863.   A Private Health Sciences college now, having a multi campus facility, ACPHS originated in 1881. Being a Private and Independent college, it was formerly named as ‘Albany College of Pharmacy’. It was in 2008 that the college came to its present name.   A small university placed in the rural setting of the Village of Alfred, Allegany County in the west part of New York, Alfred University began in 1836 as ‘Alfred Select School’. It was founded on the vision of those thinkers and liberals who dreamed of providing access to education without discrimination to every citizen of United States. By 1857, the institute had been turned into a university making it the second oldest coeducation university in the country.

  Sticking to its traditions of providing great value and being a platform for leaders in the making, AU is also recognized for supporting women and diversity in education. It was one of the earliest institutes who opened doors for African Americans and Native Americans. Among its high achieving women in history include Hannah Simpson Spencer who practiced medicine and opened a small sanatorium at her own home.   BSC is a for profit, accredited degree granting institute which was founded by brothers, John Collins Bryant and Henry Beadman Bryant, and Henry Dwight Stratton, their brother in law. It originally began as Bryant & Stratton National Business College in 1854.   Canisius was founded in 1870 by the German Jesuits. Most Rev. John Timon, C.M, the first Bishop of the city proposed the establishment of such an institute. He realized that the population in the region consisted mostly of the German speakers but the area lacked in German speaking priests. The institute began with a six year curriculum preparing students for professional schools in the field of medicine, law and divinity.

  With approval in its power to award degrees and as the institute made its move towards academic expansion, in 1897 it was made into a separate college, Canisius College.   Columbia is a private research institute and an Ivy League which was founded in the year 1754. It was established through Royal charter of King George II of England and held its classes in the same year as King’s College. By 1784 it became Columbia College and three years later, the college found itself under the governing body of Board of Trustees.  It was in late 19th century that the college transitioned as a university.

  Concordia is a four year liberal arts institute, which is a sponsored institute of the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod. The college had humble beginnings when in 1881 it was established as part of the Lutheran Church of St. Matthew. Progressing in its education it soon moved out to its branch campus in Bronxville by 1910. It was in 1936 that it received its charter.

With the popularity of the program, a proposal to the Board of Higher Education was made to develop a degree awarding institute in the field of Police Science. It was established in the 1964 and the classes were first held in 1965.

  The college is based in New York City, New York and was named John Jay College of Criminal Justice after the first Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, John Jay. The college is committed to providing morally sound and responsible professionals in the field of criminal justice, along with a strong educational base in liberal arts.

  Fordham University is a non-profit, private coeducational research university located in New York City with three main campuses: Lincoln Center in Manhattan, Rose Hill in the Bronx, and Westchester in West Harrison. It was founded in 1841 by the Most Reverend John J. Hughes, the coadjutor bishop of the Catholic Diocese of New York. It was initially named St. John’s College.   Hartwick College is a private non-denominational four-year educational institute that provides liberal arts and science studies and located in Oneonta City, New York. It was established as Hartwick seminary in 1797 to honor the Minister John Christopher Hartwick after his death. J. C. Hartwick arrived to the United States from Germany in 1746 to take over the leadership of a number of groups of settlers who along the Hudson and Mohawk rivers. In 1816, Hartwick seminary was accredited by the New York State Legislature to be a classical academy and theological seminary. In the mid of 1920s, the Lutheran leaders agreed to establish a four-year college department affiliated to the seminary. The college opened its doors in 1928 in Oneonta just few miles far away from the originals seminary with the aid of the church and some citizens. From the beginning of 1940s till the end of the 1960s, the college grew intensively in budget, donations, physical plant and size. The college gained its independency in 1968, when the Lutheran Church decided to separate it to be Hartwick College. Hartwick College continued growing between after 1992 and by 2003; it started offering notebook computers and study abroad opportunities to its students. Starting fall 2009, the three-year bachelor degree program was launched. In addition, Hartwick continued to expand its programs to include more degrees in liberal arts and sciences.

  In 2017, the College has been ranked to be the 159th best liberal arts college according to the “Best Colleges” Guide issued by the U.S. News and World Report. It has been chosen also to be the top liberal arts college in terms of “Campus Ethnic Diversity” and “Economic Diversity”.

  Hilbert College is a private Franciscan coeducational liberal arts college. The college was established in 1957 by Mother Collette Hilbert of the Franciscan Sisters of Saint Joseph under the name of the Immaculata Teacher Training School. It was founded based on the principles of the Catholic faith and the Franciscan philosophy of the Franciscan Sisters of Saint Joseph. The name was changed in 1960 to Immaculata College.   Hofstra University is a private coeducational non-profit higher education institute located in Long Island in the village of Hempstead, New York. It was established in 1935 as part of New York University. The land and estate for the campus were donated by Kate Mason to establish Hofstra college in honor of her husband; William S. Hofstra. The first classes in the university started in 1935 and got its provisional charter two years later. In 1939, the college became independent from New York University to get an absolute charter in the following year.   Houghton College is a Christian private liberal arts higher education institute. The college was established in 1883 under the name of Houghton Seminary by Willard J. Houghton who was a Wesleyan Methodist minister. Sixteen years later, Houghton started to offer college classes. It was not until 1923 that the college got its provisional charter.   Iona College is a four-year private college located in New Rochelle, New York. It was established in 1940 by the Congregation of Christian Brothers. The college was named after Iona, the island monastery of St. Columba which is located off the west coast of Scotland. At the time of establishment, Christian brothers were teaching in nine schools however, they found that many students particularly of the working class could not afford these schools. This motivated them to establish Iona College as affordable cost. In 1984, the New York governor delivered the commencement speech for the college. In 1989, the college merged with Elizabeth Seton College. In 2017, the college alumnus James Hynes and his wife, Anne Marie donated $15 million to Iona to establish a the Hynes Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation.

  Ithaca College is a coeducational liberal arts college located in Ithaca, New York. It was established in 1892 by William Egbert as a conservatory of music to support the development of Itheca, Cayuga Lake, waterfalls, and gorges. The first class started with eight students in four rented rooms. Ithaca got the college charter in 1931.   Jewish Theological Seminary of America (JTS) is a spiritual and academic center. It is also one of the main institutes offering scholarships for students in Jewish studies and it is the founding institute of Conservative Judaism in America. It was established in 1886 by Sabato Morais, rabbi of Philadelphia’s Mikveh Israel and his group to combat the dominance of the American Reform. It was established under the name of “Jewish Theological Seminary Association” in New York City and was hosted by Rabbi Henry Pereira Mendes’ Congregation Shearith Israel. In 1902, the school was incorporated into the recently established Jewish Theological Seminary of America motivated by the financial difficulties facing the school. It got its charter from the State of New York in the same year. Jacob H. Schiff donated $500,000 and a building on University Heights for the new school.  In 1909, the seminary established the Teachers Institute. The seminary opened the Leadership Training Fellowship in 1945 and the Cantors Institute in 1952. It built a satellite campus and acquired the Schocken Institute for Jewish Research in Jerusalem to host students in Israel. In 1966, the seminary’s library was burned destroying 70,000 books. In 1973, JTS got the permission to grant doctoral degrees.

  Keuka College is a liberal arts coeducational college that offers experiential education. It was founded in 1890 by George Harvey Ball as an institute for men. It is located in the Keuka Park on the shores of Keuka River in Finger Lakes region, New York.   Manhattan College is a private Roman Catholic institute for liberal arts. It was established in 1853 by the Brothers of the Christian Schools as a college for men. The college was officially recognized by a charter from the New York State Board of Regents under the name of the Academy of the Holy Infancy. The college relocated in 1922 from Manhattan to its current location in the Riverdale section of the Bronx.   Manhattanville College is a private coeducational higher educational institute. It was established in 1841 by the Society of the Sacred Heart. The college operated initially in Manhattan under the name of the College of the Sacred Heart. It relocated in 1847 to the former real estate of Jacob Lorillard in the village of Manhattanville before relocated in 1952 to Purchase, New York. The college started in 1880 to offer post high school programs. In 1917, Manhattanville received its charter to offer undergraduate programs and granted its first degrees for the first time in the following year. The name of the college was changed in 1937 to Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart. The college was leading in supporting racial equality which was evident from “Manhattanville Resolutions” that was created by the students in 1933 that declared an active student commitment to racial justice. The first African American student was admitted to the college five years later. In 1965, the college established its postgraduate program. The college kept strong bonds to the Roman Catholic Church although it was operated by an independent board of trustees. Starting 1966 to 1970, the college decided to gradually remove Catholic traditions and symbols from campus. In 1969, the college received a chart to become a coeducational institute and the first mixed men and women class was admitted two years later.

  The college current campus covers 100 acres that was established in 1952 with 6 buildings including Brownson Hall; the music building Pius X Hall; Benziger Dining Hall, and Founders Dormitory. In 1957, the Spellman Hall and the Kennedy Gymnasium were added to the campus followed by the establishment of O’Byrne Chapel in 1963 and Dammann and Tenney Halls in 1966. Other buildings established more recent include Ohnell Environmental Center, the Berman Center and Heritage Hall.   Marist College is a private coeducational for liberal arts located in the town of Poughkeepsie within the Hudson River Valley. It was established in 1905 by the Marist Brothers, a Catholic religious institute of Brothers. It initially operated under the name of “Saint Ann’s Hermitage” in a property that was purchased from Thomas McPherson. It aimed at preparing brothers for their vocations as educators following a life of “study, work, prayer and service”. The Hermitage expanded three years later by purchasing the Edward Bech estate. In 1929, the training center of the Hermitage gained a charter to offer college-level courses under the sponsorship of Fordham University. It got a charter from the State of New York in 1946 to become a four-year college under the name of Marian College. In 1958, Marist Brother Linus Richard Foy held the position as the college president at the age of 28 becoming the youngest college president in the United States. Women were admitted to the evening classes of the college in 1966 followed by admission to the morning classes two years later. In 1969, the ownership of the college was transferred from the the Marist Brothers to the Marist College Educational Corporation with the formation of independent board of trustees. In 1984, the college made a strategic agreement with IBM receiving around $4.5 million in equipment and software.

  Marist College main campus currently covers 180 acres offering several prominent buildings and facilities as Byrne House, James A. Cannavino Library, Champagnat Hall, Our Lady Seat of Wisdom Chapel, Cornell Boathouse, Margaret M. and Charles H.   Marymount Manhattan College is a private independent institute located in Manhattan, New York City. The college was established by the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary in 1936 as an extension for Marymount College, Tarrytown in New York City as a two-year college for men. In 1948, the college was converted to a four year college when it moved to its current location. It got an absolute charter from the Regents of the University of the State of New York recognizing it as an independent 4-year college.   Medaille College is a private non-denominational and co-educational college for liberal arts located in the Olmsted Crescent of Buffalo, New York. It was established in 1875 under the name of the Sisters of Saint Joseph with the aim of providing education to teachers.   Monroe College is a private for-profit higher education institute with its main campus in New York. The college was established by Mildred King in 1933 as a business school for women in the Bronx County in New York City. It was named Monroe School of Business in honor of the fifth President of the United States, James Monroe.   Nazareth College (Naz) is a private coeducational Christian independent college located in Rochester, New York. The college was established in 1924 by the Sisters of St. Joseph to fulfill the request made by Bishop Thomas Francis Hickey. The first class consisting of 25 female students was held in a large mansion known as “the Glass House” located in Rochester, New York.   New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) is a non-profit private coeducational higher education institute. The institute was established in 1910 and was initially named the New York Technical Institute. The institute was established under its current name in 1955 following a charter from the New York State Board of Regents. The institute aimed since its establishment professional education that would provide chances to the students. However, the institute also aimed at providing balanced education between liberal arts programs, and science and engineering programs. In 1958, the university expanded its campus through the purchase of the 12-story Pythian Temple building. In the same year, the institute sponsored the first National Technology Awards. In 1959, the institute started utilizing several technological instruments for education including the use of teaching machines. In 1965, the institute introduced the use of mainframes which were donated from the CIT Financial Corporation. NYIT was a leading developer of the 3D animations attracting to its labs prominent figures as Pixar Animation Studios President Edwin Catmull and co-founder Alvy Ray Smith; Walt Disney Feature Animation Chief Scientist Lance Williams and DreamWorks animator Hank Grebe. Technologies developed at the institute allowed the making of entirely 3D CGI films. In 1995, NYIT students won the first place in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Clean Air Road Rally. Three years later, the institute initiated its first international program in China. In 2007, the institute received $500,000 as a support to develop alternative food technology. In the following year, the institute received $130,000 contract from United Space Alliance to design the Orion spacecraft using 3-D motion capture technology. In 2013 and 2014, the institute had to close its campuses in Jordon and Bahrain due to changes to the local regulations.

  NYIT main campus is located in Old Westbury, New York covering 1,050 acres. The campus was opened in 1965. The campus is also home to the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine. Additionally, the NYIT has several branch campuses in Manhattan, Central Islip and Arkansas in additional to several international campuses in the United Arab Emirates, China and Canada.

  New York School of Interior Design is a private higher education institute located in New York City, New York. The school was established in 1916 by architect Sherrill Whiton. Establishment of the school started in 1914 when Whiton started Home Study Course in the Decorative Arts. He established the college 2 years later and named it New York School of Interior Decoration as the number of students increased. The school received its charter in 1924 when it was approved by the New York State Board of Regents. In 1937, Whiton published an important book in interior design education and named it “Elements of Interior Decoration”. Currently, the book is still important reference with 6 editions published while its name was changed it to “Interior Design and Decoration”. The name of the school was changed in 1951 to its current name. The school was located on Madison Avenue and in Midtown before relocating in 1994 to its current location on East 70th Street. The school expanded later by establishing a facility East 69th Street. In 2010, the school established a graduate center on Park Avenue South and 28th Street which gained LEED-Platinum certification.

  The school states that its mission is to prepare students to become leading interior designers by offering focused and immersive programs.   New York University is private non-denominational university whose main campus is located in New York City. The university was established in 1831 by Albert Gallatin aiming at providing equal opportunities to all students based on merits rather than their social class. The university received its charter in the same year from the New York State Legislature under the name of “the University of the City of New York”. Classes were held in the following year in rented classrooms in Clinton Hall. In 1835, the university established its first professional school which was the school of law. In 1876, the American Chemical Society was established within the university. The name of the university was changed to the current one in 1896.   Niagara University is a Vincentian Roman Catholic University located within the Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo in Niagara County, New York. The university is administered by the Congregation of the Mission. The university was established in 1856 and was initially located in Buffalo, New York under the name of “Our Lady of Angels Seminary”.   Nyack College is a private Christian college for liberal arts affiliated with the Christian and Missionary Alliance. The college was established in 1882 by Dr. A.B. Simpson under the name of “the Missionary Training Institute”. The school relocated several times before establishing in 1897 its campus in South Nyack, New York.   Pace University is a private coeducational higher education institute located in Manhattan, New York City. The university was established in 1906 by brothers Homer St. Clair Pace and Charles A. Pace. It was initially a coeducational business school under the name of Pace Institute. The first class consisted of 13 students.   Paul Smith’s College of Arts and Science is a private higher education institute located in Paul Smiths, New York.   UAlbany is a public research university that is part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. It has its roots in the two year normal school that was founded way back in 1844.   Binghamton University is a public and higher education research institute that was founded in year 1946 as Triple Cities College. The main purpose behind this college was to provide education to the war veterans returning from WWII. Within a few years, the college was made part of the State University of New York.

  SUNY at Fredonia is a pubic liberal arts four year college that is part of the State University of New York. It opened its doors originally in 1826 as Fredonia Academy. Within a year the academy turned into a state normal college, however it faced closure and reopened in 1867.   The College of New Rochelle is a private Catholic higher education institute located in Westchester city, Manhattan. Leland Castle was purchased in 1896 to be used as the campus for establishing the college. It was established in 1904 as the first Catholic college for women in New York State. Its name was changed 6 years later to the current name. The first class was held in Leland Castle and included 12 women. The college started offering Bachelor degree program with the beginning of the World War I. After World War II, the college joined the National Student Association and the National Federation of Catholic College Students. In 1968, the college started offering a scholarship program to African-American students from Westchester area. In the following year, the college started offering graduate degree programs which were also the first programs to enroll men at the college. In the 1970s and 1980s, the college expanded both academically and by establishing new campuses in New Rochelle, Manhattan and in Co-op City which is the largest cooperative housing development in the world. In 2002, the Gill Library was subject to major renovation process. The college established 6 years later the award-winning Wellness Center.

  The college currently operates 4 campuses with its main campus located in New Rochelle. The campus hosts 20 major buildings including the Mooney Center and Mother Irene Gill Memorial Library. The first structure on campus is the Leland Castle which is recognized as a National Historic Site. It is part of the campus quadrangle.   The College of Saint Rose is a private non-profit higher education institute located in Albany, New York. It is among few colleges sponsored by the Sisters of Saint Joseph. The college was established in 1920 by Monsignor Joseph A. Delaney from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany. The college initially started as a Roman Catholic institute for women offering liberal arts studies. It then focused mainly on the training of teachers. In 1946, the college started offering evening classes which were directed towards World War II veterans. Three years later, the college started offering graduate degree programs. Men were admitted to the evening classes and the graduate programs. The college became fully coeducational in 1969. In the following year, the college decided to include laypersons into the Board of Trustees. In 2015, the college decided to terminate the least popular 27 academic programs. This step aimed at focusing the investments on the more popular programs.

  The college states that its mission is to prepare the students to become ethical business professionals with significant contributions to the local and global community. The college campus is located in the Pine Hills neighborhood covering 46 acres. It offers several distinctive buildings and facilities including Albertus Hall and St. Joseph Hall. The oldest building on campus is Moran Hall which was formerly known as Saint Rose Hall when it was the only building for the college. The main facility for performances and exhibitions is the Massry Center for the Arts which hosts the Kathleen McManus Picotte Recital Hall, the Esther Massry Gallery, and the William Randolph Hearst Music Wing. There are few off-campus facilities owned by the college including Christian Plumeri Sports Complex and Picotte Hall.  The college athletic teams compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association as members of the Northeast-10 Conference. Their mascot is called the Golden Knight while their official colors are white, black and gold.

  The King’s College is a private Christian higher education institute located in Manhattan, New York City, New York. The college was established in 1938 by Percy B. Crawford. It initially operated in before relocated in 1941 to Belmar, New Jersey. The college moved again to New Castle, Delaware before moving once more in 1955 to the former site of Briarcliff Lodge in Briarcliff Manor, New York. In the 1990s, the college suffered from significant financial troubles and deterioration of its campus in Briarcliff. The financial problems appeared when the college purchased a new campus at Sterling Forest but was unable to sell its old campus in a timely manner. This status finally forced the college to close and declare its bankruptcy. Three years later, the college charter was amended to declare the affiliation of the college to Campus Crusade for Christ. The college started paying its debts and was reopened with the support of the Bill Bright who was a Campus Crusade ministry. In this period, the college purchased the Northeastern Bible College and leased three floors of the Empire State Building. In 2012, the college relocated to a new location very close to Wall Street and ended its affiliation to Campus Crusade. In 2018, the college purchased a former hotel in the financial district and converted it into a student dormitory.

  Touro College, officially known as Touro College and University System, is a private higher education institute located in New York City, New York.   Trocaire College is a private Catholic higher education institute. It was established in 1958 by the Sisters of Mercy in the city of Buffalo. Originally, it started as a formation college under the name of Sancta Maria College. It aimed at preparing Sisters entering the community for the ministry of teaching.   University at Buffalo is a public higher education institute located in Buffalo and Amherst, New York. It is also commonly known as SUNY Buffalo. The university was established in 1846 as a private medical school. The first class started in the following with 89 students. The school initially operated in an old post office till the first university building was established in 1850. The University of Buffalo expanded by establishing other medical programs as the pharmacy division in addition to acquiring in 1891 a law school associated with Niagara University. The university started implementing plans to complete the fundamentals of being a university. The university acquired the Erie County Almshouse grounds for this purpose. In 1916, the university received a donation of $500,000 from Grace Millard Knox to establish department of liberal arts and sciences in the University of Buffalo.
