Beginning in 1880, Bacone College is one of the oldest higher education institutes to have continued so far. Professor Almon C. Bacone, a missionary teacher became the founder when he, supported by American Baptist Home Mission Society started the school with only three students and him being the only faculty member. As the students increased, it was time to expand with the land granted by Creek Tribal Council in 1885 it found its permanent home in Muskogee, Oklahoma. It has grown to become a Private Liberal Arts college today.
The college was the vision of Bacone for a higher education institute for American Indians. However, over the years it opened its doors for all Americans, offering a multicultural setting; it has come to be a multipurpose institute working to develop students as accommodating individuals and flexible towards other societies and needs.
The campus offers many opportunities for the students. There are intramurals and game areas for students who are interested in physical activities. The college has its athletic teams called ‘Warriors’ which take part in the NAIA – Sooner Athletic Conference. There are other fun events as well such as holding a movie night for the students or engaging them in community service programs through its ‘Save a Life’ tour. There is also active spiritual life at the campus, since Bacone is a college based on Christian values. The campus has a chapel where students are encouraged to gather and be part of the spiritual awakening; an hourly session takes place every week.
Academics at Bacone consist of programs offered in the fields of liberal arts, criminal justice, business, education, healthcare, American Indian Studies and Tribal languages. These are divided into five divisions, one school and a center. Online programs are also offered by the college. CU is a Public state funded university that was founded in 1908, a year after Oklahoma Statehood. It was in 1908 that Oklahoma legislature established six agricultural high schools and so Cameron State School of Agriculture was found. It was named after Rev. E. D. Cameron, the state’s first State Superintendent of Schools. The institute received permission to award baccalaureate degrees in 1966 and was made into a college in1971. Within a few years, by 1974 it transitioned as a university.
Cameron University is based in Lawton, Oklahoma and has another branch campus in Duncan, Oklahoma. The university provides its students an experience which is rich in academic resources innovative learning, and successful career platform.
Life at CU aims to become a lifelong experience and so is filled with every activity and development program needed for its students. ECU is a public university offering undergraduate as well as graduate education and which traces its beginning to 1906 when it was founded as a normal school called East Central State Normal School. A product of intense lobbying and growing as per need, by 1919 it was granted permission by the Oklahoma Legislature to offer four year and degree programs. With expansion in its academic disciplines, in 1939 it transformed into East Central State College.
By 1947, the college gained university status and adopted its present name in 1985. Family of Faith Christian University (FFCU) commonly known as Family of Faith College has been established by Dr. Sam Matthews, his wife Kathy and Family of Faith Fellowship as a non-profit private institution. Dr. Sam finished his undergraduate and graduate studies from Oklahoma Baptist University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary respectively. It was founded in order provide churches with well trained members capable of fulfilling astolic and pastoral duties. In 1989, Dr. Sam decided to purchase a property to be able to inaugurate a university with that target. Randall University is a Christian liberal arts higher education institute associated with the Free Will Baptists. The college was established in 1959 under the name of Oklahoma Bible College. The college faced a challenge at its foundation to find a permanent place for its campus. Initially, it operated at in the basement of the First Free Will Baptist Church in Tulsa before moving in the same year to Wagoner. The college moved again to to the Northwest Free Will Baptist Church in Oklahoma City then to the Capitol Hill Free Will Baptist Church of Oklahoma City in 1961 and 1962, respectively. Four years later, the college moved to its current location south of Moore, Oklahoma. The college name was changed to Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College in honor of Hillsdale College. In 2004, the college launched its graduate school which was named Randall Graduate School in honor of the American Revolutionary War veteran and early Free Will Baptist leader in New England Benjamin Randall. In 2013, the college started its teacher certification programs. The name was eventually changed to its current name in 2016.

Langston University is a public university and the only historically black university located in Oklahoma. It was established in 1897 under the name of Oklahoma Colored Agricultural and Normal University as a result of the second Morrill Act in 1890. This act required from states with land grant universities to either admit African American or establish an alternative institute for them in order to be able to receive federal funds. It was renamed Langston University in 1940 in honor of John Mercer Langston who was a civil rights leader, congressman and founder of the Howard University Law School. In the 1960s, Langston underwent complete renovation with several additions to its facilities. In 2005, the university was approved to offer doctoral degree program.

Mid-America Christian University is a private higher education institute offering liberal arts studies. It was established in 1953 under the name of South Texas Bible Institute, initially located in Houston, Texas. Establishment was motivated by the efforts of Dr. Max R. Gaulke and the First Church of God. The name of the college was changed in 1955 to Gulf Coast Bible College along with the growth of the institute to a 4-year college. In 1966, the college joined the American Association of Bible Colleges gaining its full membership two years later. In 1968, the college also got membership in the Commission on Higher Education of the Church of God. The college established and expanded its campus in Houston by purchasing and demolishing houses in the surrounding area. This continued till 1984 when the college decided to move to Oklahoma City. The move was completed in the following year although it was not supported by all members of the college. The name was also changed during the relocation to become Mid-America Bible College. The institute finally got its current name in 2003.
The university campus covers 65 acres including several distinctive buildings and facilities as Gaulke Activity Center, Fowler Student Center, Kennedy Hall, James Curtis Sports Complex, James Curtis Sports Complex and Earlywine YMCA. Northeastern State University (NSU) is a public university located at the foot of the Ozark Mountains in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. The university was established in 1851 making it the first higher education institute to be established west of the Mississippi River. The university was established by the Cherokee Nation under the name of “National Female Seminary at Tahlequah”. In 1909, the State Legislature of Oklahoma approved the establishment of Northeastern State Normal School at Tahlequah, Oklahoma. The legislature purchased the land, building and equipment of the Cherokee Female Seminary for the establishment of the school from the Cherokee Tribal Government. Northwestern Oklahoma State University (NWOSU) is a public higher education institute located in Alva, Oklahoma. The university was established in 1897 by the Oklahoma Territorial Legislature. The university initially started as a normal school under the name of “Northwestern Territorial Normal School”. The school started its first class temporarily in the Congregational Church and was taught by two teachers only in addition to the school president, James E. Ament. The school completed its first permenant building in the same year which is named “Castle on the Hill”. In 1919, the school became a four-year college changing its name to “Northwestern Oklahoma Teachers College” before changing its name again 20 years later to “Northwestern State College”. In 1935, the Castle on the Hill building was completely destroyed by fire. In 1951, the college was authorized by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education to offer courses transferable to Oklahoma State University. Three years later, the college started offering master’s degree programs. In 1974, the college achieved the university status changing its name to the current one. In 2000, the university was among the first institutes to offer bachelor degree in e-commerce.
Northwestern Oklahoma campus grew from 40 acres in 1897 to more than 400 acres with 36 buildings. Important buildings on campus include Shockley Hall, Fryer Hall, Ament Hall, Percefull Fieldhouse, Herod Hall, Carter Hall and Coronado Hall. Oklahoma City University (OCU) is a private coeducational university that was historically affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The university was established in 1902 under the name of Epworth University. Construction of the campus started in the same year and was completed 2 years later. The college was closed in 1911 because of financial difficulties while the church formed Oklahoma Methodist University. The college relocated in 1919 to Oklahoma City under the name of Oklahoma City College. In 1924, the college got its current name to indicate the expansion of the college. In 1950s, the university received accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The university then expanded by taking control of Oklahoma City College of Law and reached a partnership with Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Oklahoma Wesleyan University is a private evangelical Christian higher education institute affiliated with the Wesleyan Church. The university was established by the merge of several former colleges. In 1909, Miltonvale Wesleyan College was established in Miltonvale, Kansas. In the following year, Colorado Springs Bible College was established. In 1959, Colorado Springs merged with Pilgrim Bible College and Holiness Evangelistic, which were founded in 1917 and 1932, forming Central Pilgrim College. In 1968, the latter was renamed Bartlesville Wesleyan College following the merge between the Pilgrim Holiness Church and Wesleyan Methodist Church into the Wesleyan Church. In 1972, Miltonvale Wesleyan College merged into Bartlesville Wesleyan College. In 2001, Bartlesville got its current name as Oklahoma Wesleyan University. OSU is a public institute and a land grant and sun grant university which was originally founded in 1890 under the Morrill Act of 1862. Oklahoma Panhandle State University (OPSU) is a public higher education institute located in Goodwell, Oklahoma. The university was established in 1908 following a decision by the Oklahoma Legislature led to the establishment of agricultural and mechanical schools as well as normal schools for each of the Supreme Court judicial districts. The college was opened in the following year as a secondary agriculture school under the name of Pan-Handle Agricultural Institute. In 1915, the college started offering courses to prepare teachers for public schools. In 1921, it became a 2-year college changing its name to Panhandle Agricultural and Mechanical College. It expanded in 1925 to a four year college. The name was changed again in 1967 to Oklahoma Panhandle State College of Agriculture and Applied Science. It finally got its current name as a university in 1974.

Oklahoma Christian University (OC) is a private Christian higher education institute for liberal arts. It was established in 1950 by members of the Churches of Christ. It initially operated in Bartlesville, Oklahoma on a campus covering 152 acres. It was a two year college under the name of Central Christian College. It started constructing a new campus in Oklahoma City. The campus was completed and the college relocated in the following year. The college was renamed in 1959 Oklahoma Christian College when it started offering bachelor degree programs. It finally achieved the university status and got its current name in the 1990s when it was reorganized into separate colleges. Oklahoma Baptist University (OBU) is a private Christian university for liberal arts. It was established in 1910 by the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma which stills owns the university. The university was established on 60 acres donated by the City of Shawnee along with $100,000. It was named the Baptist University of Oklahoma and its campus was called the Kickapoo site. The university held its first class in 1911 which included 150 students. The class was held in the basement of the First Baptist Church and in the Convention Hall of Shawnee. In 1911, the university faced financial difficulties because of general depression in the state which led to suspending classes while continuing organization and fund raising efforts. The university was reopened in 1915 after completing the construction of the Administration Hall which was later known as Shawnee Hall. The name of the university was changed 5 years later to the current one.

Oral Roberts University is a private Christian liberal arts university located in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The university was established by Oral Roberts in 1963 with the aim of building a university on God’s authority and the Holy Spirit. The first class was held at the university in 1965. The class consisted of 300 students who studied at 7 buildings constructed on campus at that time. Two years later, the university completed the construction of the Prayer Tower at the center with the total cost of $2 million. In 1971, the university received its accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission. In 1978, the university started the school of medicine with the establishment of the City of Faith Medical and Research Center hospital three years later. However, the school and the hospital were closed in 1989. Four years later, Richard Roberts, son of Oral Roberts, became the university president. In 2007, Richard Roberts took a leave of absence in response to a lawsuit filed by former university professors. Richard was accused at the lawsuit of inappropriate use of the university funds and resources for personal and political purposes. One month later, he finally resigned from his position. At that time, the university was facing significant financial difficulties with more than $50 million in debt. The university was able to overcome this situation and paying all its debts in 2009 after completing the $25 Million Dollar Matching Campaign and receiving a $70 million donation from the Mart Green Family.
ORU campus covers 263 acres with several distinctive buildings and facilities including the Howard Auditorium, the Graduate Center, the Mabee Center, and Christ’s Chapel. University of Central Oklahoma is a public higher education institute located Edmond, Oklahoma. The university was established in 1890 before the foundation of the State of Oklahoma as the Territorial Normal School. The school received $5000 of donations from Oklahoma County and 40 acre-piece of land from Anton Classen. The school used 10 acres of the land to establish its campus while using the remaining part of the land for fundraising. TU is a private institute and a research university which traces its roots to a female boarding school established in 1882 Muskogee, Indian Territory. The newly established Presbyterian School for Indian Girls quickly made progress and evolved into Henry Kendall College by 1894. When faced with financial troubles, it sought help from Synod of Indian Territory and relocated.
In Tulsa, Oklahoma, its present location, it merged with another newly founded institute and was made into the University of Tulsa, as the charter was approved in 1920. Platt is a private higher education and skill training institute that traces its beginnings to the late half of 20th century. It was founded in year 1979 to provide career training education in the region. For the state of Oklahoma, the people needed an institute that would train them for as per the labor market needs through formal education and this institute served the purpose.
Over the entire period, the focus of education and training expanded to include various field such as healthcare, nursing and culinary arts. Presently the college has its campuses throughout Oklahoma, in five locations in Tulsa, Moore, Lawton, Oklahoma City – North and Central, and is committed to providing training and growth for personal and professional success.
For the students at Platt College life on campus is unique and focused specifically on developing professional skills through training and real world exposure. All of the college campuses provide educational resources for high quality and comprehensive training such as modern classrooms, well equipped for an interactive experience as well as learning and training labs offering all the equipment to learn industry practice and get hands on experience. There are also Learning Resource Centers on the campus which offers a huge range of additional academic resources and material for the students to support their studies. The college also has its three campus operated restaurants where the culinary students in their final years take part in serving the clients and hence gain a real world experience and benefit from the advantages even before they have graduated. For career and professional preparation of its students, the college additionally provides with Career Services. Students are not only helped with gainful employment opportunities and job search but also guided for the right career field, supported with network development, help improve at interviews and prepare effective resumes and cover letters.
The programs offered at Platt consist of a total 11 programs including three Associate degree programs and a Bachelors degree program, in the fields of Healthcare and Wellness, Nursing and Culinary.
