B-CU, a historically black institute began with the efforts of Mary McLeod Bethune in 1904. Founder, Bethune started the Daytona Literary and Industrial Training School for black girls and began classes with only five girls to teach. With sincerity in her mission to provide education, the institute soon flourished. It transitioned into Daytona Educational and Industrial Institute and by 1925 had merged completely with the Cookman Institute of Jacksonville, becoming Daytona-Cookman Collegiate Institute. It gradually progressed into a university afterwards and its name was altered adding ‘Bethune’ after its founder in 1931. Everest University (EU) is a non-profit private university that has been established in Florida in 1940. The university was established as for-profit college under the name of Fort Lauderdale College of Business and Finance. The University was also known till 2007 as Florida Metropolitan University when it got its current name, Everest University. In 2018, the college name was changed to Altierus Career College.

The college recently faced several legal and financial difficulties. It was accused of abusing low income families seeking university education and better jobs for their children through aggressive marketing campaigns through the internet, TV shows and telecommunications. In 2012 and 2013, the University was shut down due to low job placement rates. At the same time, the college was subject to financial investigations by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. These difficulties ended up by converting the university into a non-profit college in 2015 when its previous owner, Corinthian College, had to terminate its work and then its administration was turned to the non-profit Zenith Education group.

The new owner of the university, Zenith group, is a newly founded organization that has successfully completed the acquisition of more than 50 campuses from WyoTech and Everest Universities. EU currently has 21 campuses distributed on 11 states. Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University known as FAMU or Florida A & M is a public university located in Tallahassee, Florida, which was founded to serve the African American people. It was established on the 3rd of October, 1887 as the State Normal College for black students in its current place on the highest of seven hills in Tallahassee. In 1891, it was granted an amount of 7,500 $ by the second Morrill Act to be changed into State Normal and Industrial College for Colored Students. In 1905, it was changed again by Buckman Act to be a higher education institute known by the modern Florida A&M University. Florida A&M changed its name again to be Florida Agricultural and Mechanical College for Negroes, then Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in 1909 and 1953 respectively. In 1951, Florida A&M expanded its programs to include both nursing and pharmacy and inaugurated a hospital. There was no other hospitals in more than 150 miles to serve black people till 1971. Although the main campus is located in Tallahassee, FAMU has other campuses in Florida where college of pharmacy, college of law and research and development center are located in Miami, Orlando and Quincy.

Florida Atlantic University is a public university known as Florida Atlantic or FAU. Its main campus is located in Boca Raton, Florida. Florida College (FC) is a private Christian national coeducational institute that was established as a junior college in the City of Temple Terrace, Florida, in 1946. Its campus is located only 13 kilometers away from northeast of the City of Tampa, Florida. The college has attracted most of its students, faculty and staff from the non-institutional churches of Christ. FC was founded mainly to provide biblical studies, trainings and support for priests and pastors. During the 1950s, most of the students in FC were old people, however, during the 1960s; its policies changes to include students outside churches of Christ. Florida State University is a public research university and a member of State University System of Florida. It was established in 1851 as West Florida Seminary by a decision from the Florida Legislature. During the civil war, the legislature decided to start formal military training at the school converting it to The Florida Military and Collegiate Institute. In 1883, the seminary became part of Florida University according to law amendment. In 1901, the university was named Florida State College with four schools.

FSU campus covers approximately 500 acres of land with 1,375,000 sq.m of built area. It owns more than 1,600 acres. Westcott building is among the most prominent buildings in the campus and it is the oldest site dedicated to higher education in Florida. The building includes Ruby Diamond auditorium which is the main performance place for the university. Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) is a state college that is located in Jacksonville, Florida, USA. It was first established as Florida Junior College in 1965. In one year only, its community grew vastly so its name was changed to be Florida Community College at Jacksonville (FCCJ) in 1965. Due to the lack of state colleges that offer four-year bachelor education, the Florida Legislature permitted the allowance of some community colleges to turn into state colleges starting 2009 to be able to offer more four-year undergraduate programs but no graduate programs. FCCJ was the first community college to follow this permission and change its system and name to be “Florida State College at Jacksonville”. Its main campus is located in Downtown, Jacksonville beside the historical Springfield area. In addition to the main campus, there are several other campuses which are the North Campus located in Dunn Avenue at the northern side of Jacksonville, Kent Campus located on the Roosevelt Boulevard at the Riverside-Avondale, and the South Campus located on Beach Boulevard at the southern side of Jacksonville. Florida SouthWestern State College, commonly known also as Florida SouthWestern or FSW, is a state college located in Fort Myers, Lee County, South Western Florida. It was originally founded in 1962 as Edison Junior College that was named after Thomas Edison, the industrialist and inventor who used to winter in Fort Myers. The Lee campus which is commonly known now as Thomas Edison campus was inaugurated in 1965. Edison Junior College name was changed several times to be Edison Community College, then Edison College in 1972 and 2004 respectively. In 2008, its name was changed again to be Edison State College since it turned to be a baccalaureate-granting state college. Eventually it was renamed to get its current name since 2014.

The main campus located in Fort Myers, Lee County, was established on 80 acres in 1965. Besides the main campus, there were some other ones such as the Collier County Campus established on 50 acres in Naples in 1991-1992 and the Charlotte County Campus founded on 204 acres in Punta Gorda in 1997. The late one is considered to be the largest campus till now. Florida SouthWestern Edison campus in Fort Myers is distinguished by possessing a unique gallery which was established to host many artistic exhibitions since 1980. On the 24th of June, 2004, the gallery was renamed again to be the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery after the artist Robert Rauschenberg in order to celebrate him.

Florida southern college (FSC) is the oldest four-year private college in Florida. It was established in 1883 in Orlando under the name Florida Southern. Since then the college relocated several times. It relocated two years after its establishment to Leesburg. In 1901, FSC moved to Sutherland which is now called Palm Harbor. In the early 1920s, fires caused the college to move temporarily to Clearwater beach before terminally relocating to its current campus in Lakeland. It got its current name in 1935 based on a decision by its board of trustees.

The current FSC campus covers 110 acres with 70 buildings. It is considered the largest collection in the world of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture. The campus is registered as a historic district on the National Register of Historic places. It has also been recently included within the National Historic Landmarks. Florida National University (FNU) has been established in 1993 as a for-profit college by Dr. José Regueiro, Mrs. María C. Regueiro and Mr. Omar Sánchez. It has two campuses; the main campus in Hialeah and the south campus in St Miami, Florida. Additionally, FNU has a separate training center in Hialeah. The University is currently administred by a board of governors consisting of two chairpersons, three permanent members, three non-permanent members in addition to an honorary member.

Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) is a public high educational institute that is located in Fort Myers, Lee County, Florida. It was established as a state university to provide high educational services to southwestern area of Florida. Board of Regents in Florida recommended inauguration of FGCU as the tenth state university in Florida in 1991, then selected its site which was a gift from Ben Hill Griffin III and Alico in 1992. In April 1993, Roy McTarnaghan was selected to be the founding president of the new university. Plans for campus construction started in February 1994 and in the same year the university got its name by the Florida Legislature. On March 1996, the Board of Regents approved the inaugural academic programs. The first class was accepted in January 1997 and the operation of classes started in August 1997. The campus occupies around 760 acres between Alico and Corkscrew Roads at the east side of Interstate 75.

Florida institute of Technology, commonly known as Florida Tech or FIT, is a private research based university. It is located in Melbourne, Florida. FIT was established by Dr. Jerome P. Keuper as Brevard Engineering College in 1958. Former buildings in Melbourne Municipal Airport, previously used by the Naval Air Station Melbourne, were used to conduct classes for almost three years. Later on, the university moved to its current location in Melbourne, Florida. During the 1960s, several classrooms, laboratories, the Denius Student Center, a library, dormitories, Gleason Auditorium and Hedgecock Gymnasium were established. Brevard Engineering College changed its name officially to Florida Institute of Technology in 1966. Florida Tech was granted an amount of 50 million dollars from the F. W. Olin Foundation to establish both engineering and life sciences buildings which were opened in 1999. Florida Memorial University (FMUniv) is a historically black institute founded in 1879, in Live Oak, Florida. The University moved and changed its name several times since its establishment. It is one of the first academic centers to operate in Florida with its first regular class starting in 1880. However, in 1892 unknown person shot fires inside the school. This led to the feeling of insecurity by the staff motivating all of them to move to Jacksonville to establish the Florida Baptist Academy. The original school continued to operate after this incidence. Four years later, the two schools merged again into Florida Normal and Technical Institute. In 1918, the school moved to St. Augustine on a large 110-acre campus that was previously one of the largest slave plantations in Florida. Finally, FMUniv moved to its current location in Miami Gardens in 1968.

FMUniv has the official colors of royal blue and orange with its mascot being Fighting Lions. The 44-acre campus has a distinctive library named after Nathan W. Collier who was the third president of the university. The library contains more than 120,000 volumes, two information commons area as well as several study and audiovisual rooms. The library subscribes also to 30 databases and more than 500 periodicals. Moreover, it contains two special collections: the Dr. Laban Connor Black Collection and The Rev. I. C. Mickins Theological and Sermonic Research. The campus also includes Lou Rawls Center for the Performing Arts which is a 450 seat theatre aimed to serve as an educational facility and performance center for the community. Florida International University (FIU) is the first and sole public university that offers undergraduate, masters and doctoral degrees located in Miami, Florida. In 1943, the former senate Senator “Ernst Graham”, introduced his vision to the state legislature to inaugurate a public university in South Florida. In 1964, the Florida Senator Robert M. Haverfield presented Senate Bill 711 including the state Board of Education and the Board of Regents (BOR) instructions to establish a state university in Miami. A year later, the governor W. Haydon Burns signed that bill to approve initiation of a university offering two-year graduate degrees. In July 1969, the Board of Regents selected Charles Perry to be the founding president of FIU. The original Tamiami Airport site was chosen to be the place of its inauguration. The first classes opened their doors to student in September 1972. Gregory Baker Wolfe, a former president of Portland State University, was selected to be the third president from 1979 till 1986 during which the university decided to include undergraduate programs and expand its graduate programs to include doctoral degrees.

FIU main campus covers 573 acres. Its oldest building was the airport’s air traffic control tower. It is known now by Ivory Tower. Besides its main campus, FIU has other some campuses inside USA in South Florida, while others in China, Italy, Nervi and Genoa.

Full Sail University is a for-profit university that was originally established as Full Sail Recording Workshop in 1979 by Jon Phelps. The university relocated and changed its name several times. The University campus covers 192 acres with specialized academic buildings including a production backlot, production environments, film backlot, and Full Sail Studios. In 2010, a new research and development lab was added to the campus aiming at development of studio and remote technologies. The lab is operated by ESPN and works in association with ESPN innovation lab found at Walt Disney World. The campus does not offer dormitory services to the students. Alternatively, the university has agreements with more than 50 residential complexes which are within 5 miles from the campus.

Full Sail University was able to get several awards related to the audio and recording arts industry. The university got the mix magazine technical excellence and creativity award as the best school for recording education. Gulf coast State College (GCSC) is a four-year public co-educational institute that is located in Panama City, Florida. The two houses of Florida Legislature agreed to inaugurate a co-educational college to provide educational services to citizens in the region. Accordingly, the institute was established as Gulf Coast Junior College in 1957. Gulf Coast Junior College expanded along the years. Indian River State College (IRSC) is a state based college that is established in Fort Pierce City in Florida to extend its educational services to Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee and St. Lucie counties. It was founded in the building of a former public school as the Indian River Junior College (IRJC) in 1959. Four years later, the Fort Pierce City donated the land of the current site to IRJC to inaugurate its current campus. Its name was changed to Indian River Community College by the members of its board of trustees to reflect the college’s efforts in providing its educational services to the surrounding communities. Lake–Sumter State College (LSSC) is a state college in Central Florida founded in 1961 by Florida Legislature authorization under the name of Lake-Sumter Junior College (LSJC) for white citizens. In parallel, they established Johnson Junior College for black citizens. LSSC is currently part of the Florida College System. LSJC students started classes in 1962 in modular buildings on the Leesburg High School campus. The college was headed by Dr. Paul P. Williams as the College’s first president. In 1965, LSJC was authorized by the Southern Association of Colleges Commission to transfer credits received from LSJC to other regionally accredited institutions. Miami Dade College is a public state higher education institute located in Miami, Florida. It was established in 1959 under the name of Dade County Junior College. Nova Southeastern University (NSU) is a private non-profit higher education institute located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Palm Beach Atlantic University is a comprehensive interdenominational Christian university located in West Palm Beach, Florida. It was established in 1968 by the pastor of First Baptist Church of West Palm Beach, Jess C. Moody. He served as the college president till he resigned in 1972 with the graduation of the first class. Palm Beach State College is a public higher education institute located in Palm Beach County, Florida. The college was established in 1933 as the first public junior college in the State of Florida. It was initially called Palm Beach Junior College operating in West Palm Beach. The college aimed at helping high school graduates in the local community find jobs during the Great Depression. The college relocated in 1948 to Morrison Field which was formerly an Army Air Force base. The college relocated again 3 years later to the Lake Park Town Hall leaving the Morrison Field which became later Palm Beach International Airport. This campus provided little space which limited the number of student enrollment to 200 and the college was commonly known as “the little orphan college”. In 1955, the college received 114 acres in Lake Worth from Palm Beach County and $1,000,000 from the state to establish a new campus. The college relocated to this campus in the following year. In 1965, the college merged with Roosevelt Junior College. In 1968, the college became an independent institute administered by its own board of trustees instead of being controlled by the Palm Beach County school district. The college opened branch campuses including Belle Glade campus, Palm Beach Gardens campus and Boca Raton campus in 1978, 1982 and 1983 respectively. In 1988, the name of the college was changed to Palm Beach Community College before being changed again in 2009 to its current one.

Pasco-Hernando State College is a public four-year college located in Pasco and Hernando Counties, Florida. The college was established in 1967 by the Florida State Legislature under the name of Pasco-Hernando Community College. In 1972, Dr. Milton O. Jones who was the dean of St. Petersburg Junior College was selected as the first president for the college. Soon after establishment of the college, a 100-acre piece of land was purchased at the cost of $125,000 to establish its first campus which is currently known as the east campus. The center was closed in 2010 with the opening of the Spring Hill Campus. In 2014, the college opened its 5th campus on a real estate in southeast Pasco County that was donated by the Porter family. In the same year, the College’s District Board of Trustees voted to change the name of the college to the current one.

Pensacola State College is a public state owned college located in Pensacola, Florida. The college was established in 1948 under the name of Pensacola Junior College. The college operated initially at a rented boarding house on Palafox and Cervantes streets. The rent was donated by businessman James H. Allen. The first class started in the same year with 136 students. In 1949, the college started publishing a student newspaper, The Beachcomber. The college expanded in 1953 by moving to a larger building on the same street that was formerly used by Pensacola High School. In 1955, Florida Governor LeRoy Collins allocated $1,243,000 to improve the college building. In the following year, the college received accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. In 1957, the college relocated to an 80-acre campus at 9th Avenue that was formerly known as Camp Franklin property. In 1965, the college merged with Washington Junior College. In the same year, the college opened an educational television building which hosted two large studios and a television station. The college started 2 years later broadcasting a TV channel to the local community. In 1977, the college opened a branch campus covering 164.7 acres at the cost of $8 million. In the following years, the college established another branch campus in Warrington. In 1998, the college started a fundraising campaign that succeeded in collecting more than $5 million. In 2004, the college campus on Naval Air Station Pensacola, which was established in 1981, was destroyed by fire. In 2010, the college changed its name to the current one.

The University of West Florida (UWF) is a public higher education institute located in Pensacola, Florida. The university was established in 1963 by the Florida Legislature as part of the State University System. Trinity College is private and evangelical institute which traces its roots to Florida Bible Institute, founded by Dr. William T. Watson in year 1932. Being a preacher and a pastor in a church in St. Petersburg., he decided to set up an educational institute based in Biblical education. It continued so until in the year 1947 with progress in its programs it adopted its present name.

University of Central Florida is a public higher education institute located in Orlando, Florida. The university was established in 1963 the Florida Legislature as a coeducational non-segregated university under the name of Florida Technological University. It aimed at providing educational programs that fulfills the needs of the space-age. In 1964, the university Board of Regents decided to purchase 1000 acre-piece of land in northeast Orlando to establish its campus. Additionally, the local community donated 227 acres and 1 million for the campus. In 1967, construction started on the first building which was opened in the following year. The first class on campus included around 2,000 students divided into 5 colleges and 55 academic programs. Students were taught by 90 instructors and 150 staff members. The first mascot was selected in 1970 which was a mix of orange and astronaut known as the Citronaut. The mascot was changed in the following year to the Knight of Pegasus. In 1978, the name of the university was changed to the current name indicating the increasing diversity of the program it offers beyond its initial mission. In the same year, the university established the Central Florida Research Park focusing on space and defense-related research. In 1986, the university established the Institute for Simulation and Training and the Center for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers. In the following years, the university grew rapidly till it became the largest university in the Unied States with respect to the number of enrolled students and faculty members.

Central Florida has 12 campuses with its main campus covering 1,415 acres. It is designed into concentric circles with the outermost circle being the Gemini Boulevard. The university athletic teams compete in NCAA Division I and the American Athletic Conference. They are nicknamed Knights and their official colors are black and gold.

The university is divided into 13 colleges including the Burnett Honors College and Rosen College of Hospitality Management. It offers 90 bachelor, 87 master’s and 31 doctoral degree programs.

USF is a public research university and a member institute of the State University System of Florida. It was founded in year 1956 as the first independent state university, signed by Florida Governor LeRoy Collins in 1955. Edward Waters is a private institute that was founded with the only objective to provide for educational opportunities for the former African American slaves in the region. It was founded in year 1866 as a school when Reverend Charles H. Pearce saw the need for an institute and raised funds to build it. The college received further help during its early years and soon flourished into a college.

Florida Polytechnic University, also known as Florida Poly, is the only public polytechnic state university available in Florida. The university focuses mainly on STEM education. Florida Poly was originally founded in 1988 as a branch of the University of South Florida. It was known as University of South Florida Lakeland. In 2008, the State of Florida changed its name to be the University of South Florida Polytechnic. Finally in 2012, University of South Florida Polytechnic was authorized by the Florida Legislature to be separate and was named by its current name. The separation process was supported Florida State Senator JD Alexander. Florida Poly first classes opened its doors for students on 25th of August, 2014. Florida Poly campus occupies around 170 acres connected with Polk State College campus through the biking university trail. The campus has a unique location in Lakeland beside the beautiful waterfalls and in the middle between Tampa and Orlando.

Florida Poly mission is to prepare leaders for the 21st Century in the sophisticated fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).It aims at preparing its students to be well-educated professionals capable of facing the innovative challenges through an integrated system .

The university is characterized by its sophisticated Supercomputer and Student Data Center Lab located in the IST building that contains a very distinguished high speed and high performance super capacity IBM computers. This distinctive supercomputer occupies its entire room and its height is almost 6 meters.

Florida Poly offers two baccalaureate degrees with 19 majors, and two master’s degrees. All the degrees and facilities of classrooms and laboratories offered by Florida Poly are prepared to provide students with STEM based education. Florida Poly campus consists of two colleges.

Miami Regional University is a private for-profit institute located in Miami Florida. It was established in 1996. It initially operated as a management consulting, training and human development institution to provide daily support to people in managing their businesses. Three years later the institute made an agreement with CareerSource South Florida before expanding its agreement with CareerSource Broward, Vocational Rehabilitation, and the Veteran’s Administration. The educational school was established in 2001 under the name of Management Resources Institute based on a license from the Florida Commission of Independent Education. At this time, the institute prepared a curriculum to prepare foreign graduate to become certified teachers in Florida State. Six years later, the college was accredited by the Council on Occupational Education (ACICS). The college achieved the university status in 2016 changing its name to Miami Regional University. Since December 2016, the ACICS became no longer recognized by the Department of Education and the university has an allowance period till 2018 to seek another accreditation from another entity to remain recognized.

New College of Florida is a public honors college operating in Sarasota, Florida. It was established in 1960 by a group of community leaders who aimed at providing an institute to serve talented students of all genders, races and religions. Establishment of the college was financially supported by the United Church of Christ. The first class started at the college four years later and consisted of 101 students. The college faced significant financial difficulties that became obvious by 1975 as the college was $3.9 million in debts. In response to this situation, the University of South Florida offered to buy the university campus to establish a branch for the Sarasota and Bradenton area. The New College board agreed with Florida State to hand over the college campus to the state in return for paying the debts and keeping the college as a separate section within the University of South Florida campus. The board of trustees was then changed into a fund raising foundation for financial support for New College to reach the required operating budget. Sharing of the campus continued for 25 years.

New College campus is located in Sarasota, Florida covering 144 acres. Its most distinctive buildings are College Hall, Cook Hall and Caples Hall which are three residential halls that were formerly the home of Edith and Charles Ringling, the home of Hester Ringling Lancaster Sanford and the home of Ellen and Ralph Caples, respectively. The three buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Other important buildings include Beverly Koski Academic Plaza and the Academic Center which received Gold Certification in 2011.

New College offers liberal arts education which adopts four main criteria including the use of narrative evaluation instead of traditional grades, signing contracts with the students each semester specifying their courses and objectives. Additionally, students are required to complete independent study project and to submit original thesis.

The University of Tampa is a private higher education institute located in Tampa, Florida. The university was established in 1931 by Frederic H. Spaulding who was former principal of Tampa’s Hillsborough High School. Two years later, the college relocated to its current location which was formerly Tampa Bay Hotel which was closed during the Great Depression. In 1941, the city signed a lease contract for 99 years at the value of $1 per year for the hotel and the school except the southeast wing which hosted the Henry B. Plant Museum. The university received full accreditation in 1951 from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. In 1974, financial problems forced the college to terminate its football team because it was not able to afford the costs of competing in the NCAA Division I. The university received two major donations of $10 million and $28 million in 1997 and 2000, respectively. The donations were part of the fund raising campaign “Take UT to the Top” which succeeded in collecting $83 million.

Tampa states that its mission is to provide high quality education to students from diverse backgrounds. The university campus covers 110 acres in downtown Tampa. It has several distinctive buildings and facilities including Cass Building, Dickey Health and Wellness Center, Edison Building, East Walker Hall, Falk Theatre. The campus offers 12 residence halls including Austin Hall, Barrymore Hotel, McNeel Boathouse, Palm Apartments and Vaughn Center. Athletic facilities on campus include Pepin Stadium and Martinez Athletics Center. Tampa athletic teams compete in NCAA Division II as members of the Sunshine State Conference. Their mascot is called Spartacus while their colors are black, red and gold. Tampa students publish a literary journal called Neon and a newspaper called the Minaret.

The university is divided into 4 colleges including Sykes College of Business. It offers academic programs in more than 200 areas of studies.
