A private university and a non profit higher education institute, Caribbean began in 1969 as Caribbean Junior College. With limited educational opportunities available to students, this new college in the region opened up many educational opportunities. It was first accredited in 1972 and by 1978 was offering programs at Baccalaureate level and with this progressed as a university college. Its present transition, into a university happened in 1990.

A Private and Non Profit university, CAU started when it was founded in 1966 as Instituto Psicológico de Puerto Rico. The institute at that time was set up considering the need for focused education in clinical psychology and so initially offered just that. There was shortage of mental health education and especially those adjusted to the socio cultural demands of the region. It was Dr. Carlos Albizu-Miranda who established the institute and who in 1980 also founded the Miami Institute of Psychology in Miami, Florida.
The two institutes merged under a new name, in 2000 and came to be known as Carlos Albizu University, named after the founder. It is a multi campus institute with campuses in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Miami, Florida. With its education it responds to the evolving challenges at national as well as international levels, with an understanding of social responsibility and sensitivity of human nature.
For students, life at CAU begins with programs, activities and events of social, interactive as well as educational in nature bringing students of all interests together. Columbia had its beginning in the year 1966 when it was established by a group of entrepreneurs as Caguas City College. By 1974 the college ownership changed hands and with that the college expanded its academic programs to offering Associate programs. UPRPR is a public institute and a research university that was originally founded as a teacher training institute in the year 1900 called the Insular Normal School. In a couple of years, by 1903 under the Law of March the university was created and which incorporated the normal school. Another development to the university happened in 1908 when it was made into a land grant institute under the Morrill-Nelson Law.

AU began its journey as an institute providing post secondary education in 1963. It was founded by Juan B. Nazario Negrón and was named as American Business College and focused on providing business education. Gradually, it improved its academic offerings including arts and sciences and developing its graduate programs. Hence it was renamed as American University of Puerto Rico. Atenas was founded in the year 1996 by the efforts of Professor María L. Hernández. She along with a group of educators worked hard to set up an institute and by next year the college had received authorization by the General Education Council for providing technical education at post-secondary level. Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music is a public higher education located in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The conservatory was established in 1959 by state legislator Ernesto Ramos Antonini following the success of the Casals Festival in 1957. The conservatory initially aimed at preparing students to participate in the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra or become music teachers in the state public education system. It originally operated in a former factory in Hato Rey. The administration of the college was transferred several times between public agencies since its establishment including the Puerto Rico Industrial Development Company, the Administration for the Encouragement of Arts and Culture, and the Musical Arts Corporation. This the university does through theatres, festivals, literary and musical events, etc. The students are also encouraged for community engagement and social work and so volunteer their time and efforts working for the welfare of the communities. This helps students in understanding service and leadership. For further student support and assistance, the campus offers Office of Quality of Life which looks at student concerns while aiming to improve campus welfare and strict obedience to campus rules. Through this it ensures healthy environment for every student. There is also the department for counselling which works to maintain student health and provide them counselling in psychological and mental problems. There are also student athletics which offer participation in intercollegiate sports. The university campus has its own mascot, ‘El Búho (Owl)’.
The Academic programs at UPRH consists of two Associate degree programs, Baccalaureate programs in six areas and five Bachelors degree programs.
