What is an Amazon Now Driver?

The following job responsibilities are common for individuals in Amazon Now driver roles:

  • Pick up packages from a local Amazon warehouse and deliver packages to customers
  • Load and unload packages from vehicles
  • Deliver packages in person, and record details of package recipient when required

A Day in the Life

While you can get preferred scheduling by reserving working hours the week before deliveries, it’s also possible to schedule hours to deliver Amazon Prime Now packages on the same day you want to work. Drivers start their day by choosing what hours they want to work within the Amazon Flex driver app, and then go to the facility to await a delivery order. Drivers are paid for the time spent waiting at the facility whether they are actively delivering packages or not. Once you arrive, you check in using the app.

Eventually, an Amazon worker will call your name, and you’re given either a single package or a cart of packages. How many you receive depends on how many packages need to be delivered on a route. You follow in-app directions to navigate to the customer’s home or office, and then you deliver the package. Some packages can be left on the doorstep, some must be delivered to a person with the receiving individual recorded in the app, and some require age verification (for age-restricted purchases).

After delivering your package, you’ll continue making deliveries if additional deliveries were received while you were at the warehouse, or you’ll return to the facility to await another package if you’ve completed that set of deliveries. This continues throughout your shift. In addition to a set hourly rate for delivery, Amazon Now drivers also make tips, so the more friendly and efficient you are, the more money you’ll make working for the Amazon Flex program.

Typical Work Schedule

Amazon Now drivers set their own schedules and can work in 2, 4, and 8-hour shifts pretty much any time when the local Amazon warehouse is open. Day shifts, evening shifts, and weekend shifts are available, and hours can be scheduled either in advance or the day of deliveries.

Projected Job Growth

As Amazon continues to expand into additional markets, the demand for Amazon Now drivers will continue to grow. Drivers may also be able to use the experience gained working as an Amazon Now driver to secure positions as Uber drivers or food delivery drivers.

How To Become an Amazon Now Driver

To become an Amazon Now driver, you need to complete an application on the Amazon Flex website. The application process includes a mandatory background check that you’re required to pass to be approved to deliver Amazon Prime Now packages. No formal education or experience is required to deliver packages for Amazon Flex, though a functional knowledge of the delivery area is beneficial.

It can take up to two weeks for your application to be approved after submitting it, so don’t be concerned if you don’t hear back immediately. Once your application is approved, you’re required to watch a series of video webinars that train you on the processes you’ll be expected to execute as an Amazon Now driver. Once you complete the webinar training, you’ll be able to download the Amazon Flex driver app and start scheduling shifts for deliveries.

One benefit for Amazon Now drivers is that it doesn’t matter what type of car you use to deliver packages. While you’ll obviously need a functional car to perform deliveries, there are no requirements for the type of car used like there are for popular rideshare services.
