A Day In The Life

Computer repair technicians assess, repair and maintain computers for clients.  They use tools and equipment to maintain computers at optimal operating levels.  They repair all aspects of the computer, from processors, hard drives, and monitors to software, data retrieval and desktops.

There are a wide range of problems and  issues that can happen to a computer.  To correct the issues that may arise in a computer, their tasks vary and can include, replacing defective or broken parts, soldering damaged circuit boards, and removing any viruses, to installing programs to protect the computer and enhance security.  Upgrading and assembling computers is also an important aspect of this job.  Replacing malfunctioning or obsolete parts and upgrading these parts with the appropriate one that matches the computer system is also integral to this position.  They determine the best solutions for their clients computer repair needs and wants.

Typical Work Schedule

This is a full-time position that may require some shift work depending on where the individual is employed.  Some overtime may also be required depending on the project timeline.

A certificate in computer repair technology or an associates degree in computer maintenance technology will assist a student develop their basic and fundamental skills needed for this occupation.  These programs can also prepare students with pursuing industry certifications, which are generally preferred by employers.

Most computer repair technicians in computer repair or a certification or technical degree in computer repair.  Skills are essential so that they can be familiar with all aspects of hardware and software of computers.  Training addresses subjects like networking, computer hardware and software knowledge, operating systems, hard-drive backup, digital logistics and computer accessories.  Graduates should also possess the ability to install, upgrade and troubleshoot computers as well.  Problem solving and logic skills are also extremely important as well.  People skills are also paramount because they deal with clients on a regular basis.
